“Extraordinary conditions” prevailed in the sessions held and under way today on global markets, in the wake of the outcome of the US midterm elections, with Democrats winning the House of Representatives and Senate by almost sweeping margins.
European stock markets responded positively, with banks leading the advance and traders judging that the US election result could give Donald Trump second thoughts about the aggressive trade and economic agenda he is trying to implement. Clean energy stocks also posted strong gains, while defence shares came under pressure.
It should be noted that the newly composed Congress will begin its work on 3 January 2027, with all that may entail.
The picture was also positive on the Athens Stock Exchange, with the main indices holding in positive territory and showing signs of outperforming, while the bank index’s 2.81% gain leaves no doubt about which sector led the advance.
It is worth noting that the bank index ended at a one-month high, with its next-highest close recorded on 6 October 2026 (3,260.84 points).
The General Index also ended at a one-month high, with its next-highest close recorded on 6 October 2026 (2,686.2 points).
Starting with international markets, which continue to shape sentiment on the Athens Stock Exchange, today’s positive picture across Europe was supported by a further fall in oil prices and a slight easing in government bond yields, which helped bolster buyer sentiment.
“The US has no immediate plans to attack Iran after the midterm elections,” Donald Trump said, although he made clear he was ready for further military operations if necessary.
It is worth recalling that eurozone countries have until 6 November to submit candidates for the next president of the European Central Bank. Finance ministers from countries that have adopted the euro are expected to consider the nominations at the Eurogroup meeting on 9 November.
The Bank of England is also due to announce its decision on interest rates tomorrow.
It remains to be seen how Wall Street responds over the medium term. It began today’s session with substantial gains, and it is unclear whether expectations of regulatory intervention in the artificial intelligence sector will prevail.
As for the NYSE, there is also a more cautious view, with a number of analysts arguing that “a Congress under Democratic control, combined with states run by Democrats, means tighter scrutiny of data centres, energy consumption and local approvals, prompting investors at a later stage to move quickly to reduce their exposure to the artificial intelligence sector”.
On corporate earnings, Beta Sec. said: “Today, after the NYSE close, Arm, Diversified Energy, Qualcomm, Snap and IonQ report. Before the market opens on Thursday, 5 November, AngloGold Ashanti, ConocoPhillips, Lemonade, Unity Software and Viatris will report, while D-Wave Quantum is also expected to release results. Airbnb and Cloudflare follow after the close. On Friday, 6 November, Moderna reports before the open and Wheaton Precious Metals after the close”.
Back on the Athens Stock Exchange, features of today’s session included a clear increase in turnover—the highest in the past four sessions—, a rush to close short positions, and a relative retreat by indices and individual stocks from their intraday highs.
Despite the “celebratory” mood on the trading board, there was little worth highlighting positively among mid- and small-cap stocks. It could hardly have been otherwise, given that FTSE 25 stocks accounted for around 96% of total gross trading value (!).
In Greece, bank results and management updates on the year-end outlook and 2027 will keep the sector’s shares in focus.
