As he does every Saturday, Alexis Tsipras, president of the Greek Left Coalition, recommends a film of the week, always inspired by the events of the day. Today he has chosen “The Big Short”, directed by Adam Black and starring Steve Carell, according to a post on the subject.
According to the accompanying text, “the past week saw an Article 23 over which New Democracy MPs have yet to decide whether it was good or bad. Of course, those who think it was good have not told us why it was withdrawn, while those who believe it was bad have no convincing explanation for how it got there in the first place”. (Editor’s note: the video features statements by government officials and members of the New Democracy parliamentary group.)
“And all this while,” the ELAS president notes, “there were five times as many auctions in 2025 alone as in the entire five-year period from 2015 to 2019, while this year the number has risen even further.
With a government that cares only about not upsetting the cartels driving up prices and about doing everything it can to help the funds, perhaps the Minister of National Economy and Finance, who introduced Article 23 in Parliament, should change his title. He should be renamed Minister for High Prices and Auctions. It would suit him better.
The post concludes: “But if you want to find out exactly how this trick works and who profits from ordinary people’s misfortune, all you have to do is watch the film of the week”.
To close, Alexis Tsipras is shown saying that “any resemblance to persons and situations is entirely coincidental. After all, in Greece we love basketball, not baseball. Enjoy the film”.
