One of the most important modernization projects of the electricity Distribution Network is being completed by HEDNO, implementing the largest capacity increase program in 150/20kV Substations ever carried out in the country.
The program concerns the reinforcement of 14 High to Medium Voltage Substations throughout the Greek territory, adding a total of 725 MVA of new capacity to the Network. The investment creates significant additional electrical space, facilitating the connection of new Renewable Energy Sources (RES) units and strengthening the country's energy transition. At the same time, the necessary infrastructure is being created for the connection of electricity storage units to the Network, further enhancing the flexibility and reliability of the Distribution Network.
The capacity increase is carried out either through the installation of new Power Transformers or through the replacement of existing ones with new higher-capacity units. At the same time, the Medium Voltage side of the Substations is being expanded, so that the connection of new lines and more RES projects to the Network becomes possible.
The project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), within the framework of Action 16899 of Axis 1.1 “Transition to a new environmentally friendly energy model”.
Of particular value is the fact that the program is being completed within a particularly demanding timetable. The selection of the Substations and the inclusion of the project in the Recovery Fund took place in July 2022, while within less than four years complex technical interventions were completed in facilities with different characteristics and in geographically remote areas of the country.
With the completion of the project, the Distribution Network acquires an increased capacity to accommodate clean energy, strengthening security of supply, its operational flexibility, sustainable development, and the achievement of national energy targets.
The following Substations have already been energized and are in operation:
• 150/20kV S/S Ioannina I – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Florina – increase by 50 MVA
• Meliti HVC – increase by 50 MVA
• Filippoi HVC – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Eordaia – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Megara – increase by 75 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Domokos – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Pylos – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Oinofyta – increase by 50 MVA
The works at the following Substations have been completed and energization is expected within the year:
• Arachthos HVC – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Skydra – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Spercheiada – increase by 50 MVA
• Trikala HVC – increase by 50 MVA
• 150/20kV S/S Magiko Xanthi – increase by 50 MVA
