The monthly net flow of total bank financing was positive by 1,644 million euros in May 2026, compared with a negative net flow of 1,081 million euros in the previous month, according to data from the Bank of Greece.
I.1 Financing of general government
The monthly net flow of bank financing to general government, in May 2026, was positive by 329 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 135 million euros in the previous month. The annual growth rate of financing to general government stood at 0.0% from -0.7% in the previous month.
I.2 Financing of the private sector
In May 2026, the annual growth rate of total bank financing to the private sector increased to 7.4% from 6.8% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of total financing to the private sector was positive by 1,315 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 1,216 million euros in the previous month.
I.2.1 Financing of businesses
The monthly net flow of bank financing to businesses, in May 2026, was positive by 1,285 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 1,150 million euros in the previous month, while the annual growth rate increased to 9.8% from 8.8% in the previous month. More specifically, the annual growth rate of bank financing to non-financial corporations (NFCs) increased to 9.8% from 9.5% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of their financing was positive by 427 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 731 million euros in the previous month. The annual growth rate of financing to insurance corporations and other financial institutions increased to 9.2% from 2.8% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of their financing was positive by 858 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 419 million euros in the previous month.
I.2.2 Financing of self-employed professionals, farmers and sole proprietorships
In May 2026, the monthly net flow of bank financing to self-employed professionals, farmers and sole proprietorships was negative by 9 million euros, compared with a negative net flow of 54 million euros in the previous month. The annual growth rate of their financing stood at -2.0%, unchanged compared with the previous month.
I.2.3 Financing of individuals and private non-profit institutions
Positive by 39 million euros was the monthly net flow of bank financing to individuals and private non-profit institutions in May 2026, compared with a negative net flow of 13 million euros in the previous month. The annual growth rate of their financing stood at 2.7%, unchanged compared with the previous month.
II. Deposits of the domestic economy in domestic credit institutions
The monthly net flow of total deposits was positive by 5,063 million euros in May 2026, compared with a negative net flow of 34 million euros in the previous month.
II.1 Deposits from general government
A decrease of 249 million euros was recorded in May 2026 in general government deposits, compared with an increase of 32 million euros in the previous month, while the annual growth rate decreased to 14.6% from 22.5% in the previous month.
II.2 Deposits from the private sector
Private sector deposits increased by 5,313 million euros in May 2026, compared with a decrease of 66 million euros in the previous month, while the annual growth rate increased to 7.8% from 5.8% in the previous month. Total private sector deposits appear strengthened at 214.89 billion euros.
II.2.1 Deposits from businesses
An increase of 4,973 million euros was recorded in May 2026 in business deposits, compared with a decrease of 935 million euros in the previous month, while the annual growth rate increased to 18.7% from 10.8% in the previous month. More specifically, NFC deposits increased by 4,582 million euros, compared with a decrease of 1,075 million euros in the previous month. Deposits of insurance corporations and other financial institutions increased by 390 million euros, compared with an increase of 139 million euros in the previous month.
II.2.2 Deposits from households and private non-profit institutions
An increase of 340 million euros was recorded in May 2026 in deposits by households and private non-profit institutions, compared with an increase of 869 million euros in the previous month, and the annual growth rate stood at 4.1%, unchanged compared with the previous month.
