With the US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle met Alexis Tsipras, with whom he discussed developments in Greece and the wider region, as well as Greek-American relations.
According to the announcement of ELAS:
“Mr. Tsipras referred to the reasons and the framework for the creation of the Greek Left Alliance, and to the need for political change, as well as a change in policy that the country needs.
At the same time, the discussion focused on Greek-American relations, especially in the areas of strategic dialogue, defense, economy and energy, and the important steps that were taken during the period 2015-2019.
Alexis Tsipras underlined that Greek-American relations must be based on mutual benefit and not on the logic of the given ally and the blank check.
In this context, he highlighted Greece’s role as a pillar of peace, stability and security, adding that the only way to ensure these in the wider region is diplomacy, with international law as the point of reference and not military operations that violate it.
In particular, he referred to the need for an immediate end to the conflicts in the Middle East as well as to the genocide in Gaza by the Israeli government, while he assessed as positive the American initiatives to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine and achieve a just and sustainable peace in the region. At the same time, he highlighted the need to support the initiative of the UN Secretary-General to restart talks on the Cyprus issue for a just and sustainable resolution of the problem on the basis of the Guterres framework.
Finally, he stressed the need for the US to send a clear message to Turkey and especially in the context of the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, for respect for international law and an end to provocations. At the same time, he expressed his opposition to the sale of new American armaments to Turkey under these conditions, including F35. He also highlighted the importance of recourse to the International Court of Justice in The Hague for the delimitation of the EEZ and continental shelf with Turkey.”
Present at the meeting were the EL.A.S. Head of Foreign Affairs, Haris Tzimetras, the diplomatic adviser, Dimitris Papageorgiou and the head of the Press Office, Andreas Bousios.
