Nikolas Farantouris, MEP of PASOK, calls on the Government to answer whether it agrees with the statements of ND parliamentary representative Stratos Simopoulos on a television program.
As the Greek MEP emphasizes, “at a time when Turkey's provocativeness is escalating with the enactment of a law on the ‘Blue Homeland’ at the gates, with the casus belli and the obstruction of important infrastructure projects (cable), with an illegal indefinite NAVTEX already in the Aegean, with the Turkey-Libya memorandum on the table, with the exclusion of Cyprus from the preparatory work of the World Climate Conference COP31 in Antalya, with the demand for rearmament with the American F110 engines and with the claim for two more new NATO Headquarters in Istanbul and Adana for the control of the Bosporus and the Eastern Mediterranean, the position of the ND Government is: ‘Why not, with Turkey we are allies’.
This was stated by ND parliamentary representative Stratos Simopoulos, in response to a question by PASOK MEP Nikolas Farantouris on the program Rush Ηour of Νaftemporiki TV with Filippos Filippakopoulos.
Nikolas Farantouris points out that “at the same time, the PASOK MEPs have reacted with written questions - interventions both regarding the illegal NAVTEX and the forthcoming legislation on the ‘Blue Homeland’, the illegal deployment of 6 Turkish F-16 fighter jets in the occupied territories, and the exclusion of Cyprus from the preparatory work of COP31 and of course regarding the electrical interconnection with Cyprus.
At the same time, Nikolas Farantouris, as a member of the American Relations Committee of the European Parliament, sent an official letter on Friday to his counterparts on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the American Congress about the risks that the possible sale to Turkey of the American F110 engines poses to the peace, stability and security of the region.
“To the Government's prolonged silence on ALL these challenges, there is added today the statement of ND parliamentary representative Stratos Simopoulos regarding ND's position on the forthcoming upgrade of Turkey with the acquisition of two more new Headquarters amid these developments: ‘Why not? With Turkey we are allies’.
In statements from Brussels, Nikolas Farantouris stressed: “Greece today more than ever needs foreign policy with a plan, initiatives and strategic depth. It needs the political change and the strong international presence that only PASOK guarantees”.
