His departure from SYRIZA was announced by the party’s until recently press representative, Kostas Zachariadis, with a written statement in which he criticizes the course of the party and expresses his support for the new political venture of Alexis Tsipras.
In his statement, Mr. Zachariadis says that “at critical moments in politics and in public life we must speak openly and clearly”, noting that the founding of the new party by Alexis Tsipras creates new political realities that, as he notes, “no one can ignore.”
As he argues, the new venture “rearranges the space of the Left and the Center-left” and “seems that it can play a decisive role in shifting the political balances in the country.”
Criticism of SYRIZA’s course
The former press representative of SYRIZA argues that the party is once again in a period of intense introversion, also in view of the meeting of the Central Committee on July 11.
“In this condition SYRIZA is once again in a new vortex of introversion and ahead of the Central Committee there is an issue of political direction and leadership, while the margins have long since been exhausted,” he states characteristically.
It cannot be my SYRIZA
Mr. Zachariadis makes clear that he cannot remain in a SYRIZA that will follow a different electoral course from that of Alexis Tsipras. “In my opinion, a SYRIZA that will run with a different ballot from Tsipras in the elections cannot be my SYRIZA, my party,” he emphasizes.
He further adds that this shift “has already taken place” in the party’s public discourse, stressing that he cannot participate “in a SYRIZA as it is being shaped from now on, much more so if hostility and confrontation develop on non-political terms.”
Closing his statement, Kostas Zachariadis notes that “we are at the beginning of the beginning of a new cycle in the country’s political system, but also of the broader progressive space, which will last a long time,” formalizing his departure from SYRIZA.
