The Region of Thessaly is moving forward with a significant initiative that has a strong social and humanitarian impact, by funding the upgrade of dental equipment in Thessaly’s correctional facilities, with the aim of improving healthcare conditions for inmates and strengthening public health.
The relevant call for proposals, titled “Upgrading Dental Equipment for the Needs of Correctional Facilities in the Region of Thessaly,” with funding from the “Thessaly Regional Development Program 2026–2030” amounting to 90,000 euros, with the Ministry of Citizen Protection as the beneficiary.
The initiative concerns the renewal and modernization of dental equipment in the region’s four correctional facilities (two in Magnesia and one each in Larissa and Trikala), addressing real needs that had remained unmet for years.
As noted, in several prisons the existing equipment is outdated or inadequate; a telling example is the Larissa prison, where a decades-old dental chair—donated by a retired dentist—had been in use. Until now, many dental procedures required the transport of inmates outside correctional facilities under police escort, a fact that placed a burden on both the services and the inmates themselves.
The Regional Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Koureta (photo) emphasizes that this initiative is part of the overall shift in priorities set by the Regional Authority, with an emphasis on health, social cohesion, and addressing everyday problems affecting people: “The state has a duty to provide prisoners with decent healthcare,” he notes.
The Region of Thessaly points out that upgrading the equipment will allow for the provision of more and higher-quality dental services within correctional facilities, serving a larger number of inmates while reducing the need for transfers. The initiative is also expected to significantly facilitate the work of the Hellenic Police by reducing the need for transfers for medical care.
According to the Call for Proposals, the funding is part of the Region’s strategy to improve health services, upgrading healthcare infrastructure, preventing and protecting public health, and ensuring equal access to primary care services for all citizens, including vulnerable social groups.
“Not all projects need to be large to be significant. Policy is meaningful when it identifies real needs and provides solutions. People—not clientelistic logic—must be at the center of public policies,”emphasizes the Regional Governor of Thessaly.
With this initiative, the Region of Thessaly continues to invest in initiatives that strengthen social protection, dignity, and equal access to health services, demonstrating that care for people does not stop at the boundaries of any social group.
