Top Boy: Season 2 - DVD review

Jonathan van Tulleken, 2013

Warner

The first Top Boy - gangsters, crack and blighted lives on an east London estate - was grim but gripping. This batch of four is, if anything, grimmer - and no less compelling.

One year on, Dushane (Ashley Walters) wants to "step up" in the drugs trade, while the "Feds" and some Albanian rivals have different ideas. Writer Ronan Bennett doesn't preach, to the point where you wonder whether he isn't being too easy on Dushane, but terrific performances, crisp direction and melancholic tunes from Ghostpoet keep your doubts at bay. Top stuff.
